Now let us see what Tanzania looks like in January in detail.
Climate and Landscape
Tanzania experiences two wet seasons, with short rains occurring from October to early December and long rains from March to May. Positioned between these wet seasons, January initiates the Green season in Tanzania. While some showers may occur, they are lighter than the downpours characteristic of the Wet Season, resulting in a relatively drier period. During this month, temperatures range from a high of 28°C / 83°F to a low of 15°C / 60°F.
Accommodations and Crowds
January doesn't align with either the low or high season, reducing the likelihood of accommodation closures. Consequently, crowds are generally moderate, with a slight increase at the beginning of the month due to New Year celebrations. As the month progresses, the number of visitors decreases, impacting costs. Accommodation prices may be higher at the start of January, gradually reducing towards the end of the month.
Serengeti
In January, the Wildebeest Migration arrives in Southern Serengeti and Ndutu, a part of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The great thing about the migration being present in Southern Serengeti and Ndutu is that this region remains relatively dry compared to other parks and areas. The elevated terrain of Ngorongoro acts as a barrier, obstructing clouds and limiting rainfall in the southern part of Serengeti. In addition to the migration, the region hosts various ungulates such as zebras, impalas, and gazelles. The substantial presence of herbivores attracts big cats like cheetahs and lions, often found lurking in ambush along the fringes.
Apart from the Southern Serengeti/Ndutu region, Serengeti in general, especially Central Serengeti, remains a great location throughout the year. Central Serengeti is famous for the Seronera Valley, teeming with big cats, earning it the name of the Big Cat Capital. Additionally, Central Serengeti is home to a diverse array of other animals like giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, warthogs, elephants, impalas, and more. Its landscape features the classic Serengeti grasslands studded with stunning kopjes, providing ample opportunities to witness wildlife in their natural habitat. Therefore, Central Serengeti is an excellent destination for wildlife enthusiasts in January and throughout the year.

Ngorongoro
As a segment of the migration extends into Ngorongoro, the local wildlife experiences a population boost. Due to recent rains, the landscape boasts lush greenery without excessive wetness. Ngorongoro's high concentration of animals ensures abundant wildlife sightings amidst the flourishing vegetation. Besides the wildlife, Ngorongoro serves as a haven for numerous migratory birds such as lapwings, harriers, bee-eaters and more in January, creating an ideal setting for bird enthusiasts. Situated at a higher altitude, Ngorongoro exhibits varying temperatures, with January ranging around 23°C / 73° F and potentially dropping as low as 10°C / 50°F particularly on the crater rim.

Tarangire
In January, the wildebeest population in Tarangire diminishes, yet the landscape remains vibrant with other herbivores such as zebras, impalas, giraffes, and elephants still in abundance. Buffaloes tend to congregate near the Silale swamps, and the iconic baobabs maintain their towering and majestic presence. While the region takes on a green hue, the grass remains short, providing good visibility for observing the diverse wildlife.

Lake Manyara
Likewise, at Lake Manyara, the landscape transforms into a green and lush haven, hosting diverse wildlife including elephants, giraffes, and antelopes. The park's various ecosystems, ranging from floodplains to rainforests, also attract numerous migratory birds.
It must be noted that recent environmental changes have disrupted the park's ecosystem, prompting several birds and animals to find a home in other regions. For further insights into Lake Manyara, detailed information is available on our dedicated page here.

Island Escape:
Zanzibar
Much like the National Parks, Zanzibar welcomes a warm climate in January, making it an ideal time to explore its pristine beaches. In fact, January stands out as one of the hottest months on the island. While occasional thunderstorms may occur, they tend to dissipate quickly. Windy conditions are likely on the northern and eastern ends, creating optimal conditions for sports like kitesurfing and parasailing, whereas the sheltered southern ends are relatively calmer. The island also becomes calmer towards late January as crowds reduce, and accommodations and services potentially offer discounts to tourists.
Pemba
Pemba Island in January provides a serene tropical experience, ideal for those looking for a quiet retreat. Dive into the clear waters surrounding Pemba for a mesmerising underwater adventure and snorkel amidst vibrant coral colonies.
Mafia Island
Mafia Island also offers a calm tropical experience in January. Explore the island's serenity and dive or snorkel in the pristine waters. Witness the beauty of vibrant coral colonies beneath the surface, creating a captivating underwater scene, and swim with the whale sharks.

Southern Circuit
In January, the Southern Circuit of Tanzania presents a captivating blend of verdant landscapes, wildlife activity, and unique safari experiences. As part of the region's transitional period between short rains and the onset of the long rainy season, here's what you can anticipate: In the Southern Circuit, January delivers pleasantly days with temperatures ranging from 25°C (77°F) to 33°C (91°F). While the days are mostly sunny, occasional short rain may occur, adding a refreshing touch to the surroundings. Compared to the heavy rainfall of the wet season from March to April, these showers are limited and do not significantly disrupt activities.
Within the parks of the Southern Circuit, the recent rains have transformed the landscapes into lush, green expanses. This lushness contributes to the beauty of Mikumi, Ruaha, and Selous Game Reserve, but can make wildlife spotting slightly challenging as animals blend into the foliage. Additionally, the rain can lead to bumpy roads, which may not appeal to everyone, but enhance the adventure aspect of some as they navigate through these parks' terrain.
Despite the thicker vegetation, wildlife viewing remains rewarding in January. While not at its peak as during the dry season from June to October, this time offers unique opportunities. Animals may be harder to spot amidst the greenery in Mikumi and Ruaha, but there's an increased likelihood of witnessing predators on the hunt, taking advantage of the easier prey ambushes due to the lush environment. Furthermore, January is an excellent period for birding enthusiasts as migratory birds flock to Tanzania, adding vibrancy to the avian population, particularly in the Udzungwa Mountains National Park.
For tourists, a variety of activities await in the Southern Circuit during January. Classic game drives, although requiring a bit more effort in spotting animals in Mikumi and Ruaha, still showcase a diverse array of wildlife including iconic species like lions, elephants, zebras, and giraffes. Boat safaris along the Rufiji River in Selous Game Reserve offer a unique perspective, allowing encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and numerous bird species. Walking safaris, particularly rewarding in Ruaha and the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, provide intimate experiences, unveiling smaller creatures and intricate plant life that may be missed during vehicle-based safaris.

Western Circuit in January
In January, the Western Circuit of Tanzania's captivating parks offer a distinctive experience amidst the wet season shoulder month. The weather brings warm to hot days with occasional showers, enhancing the lushness of Gombe Stream National Park and Mahale Mountains National Park. While this creates a vibrant landscape, it also presents challenges for wildlife spotting and may result in bumpier roads due to rain.
Despite these conditions, wildlife activity remains good in January, although it's not at its peak as during June to October. The denser vegetation can make spotting animals more challenging, but it also increases the chances of observing predators in action as they take advantage of concealed prey.
Gombe Stream National Park, renowned for Jane Goodall's chimpanzee research, provides opportunities to witness these fascinating primates in their natural habitat. Additionally, boat trips on Lake Tanganyika offer encounters with hippos, crocodiles, and diverse bird species.
In Mahale Mountains National Park, chimpanzee trekking is a highlight, providing memorable experiences with these intelligent creatures. Boat safaris along Lake Tanganyika's shores unveil more wildlife sightings, while sport fishing (subject to regulations) adds to the park's diverse activities. Birding enthusiasts will delight in the abundance of birdlife present during January.
Activities such as chimpanzee trekking, boat safaris, and hiking are available for visitors seeking immersive experiences. Permits for chimpanzee trekking are essential and should be booked in advance due to limited availability.
Considering the pros and cons of visiting in January, several advantages stand out. The Western Circuit experiences fewer crowds during this period, offering a more secluded safari experience. The weather is pleasant, characterised by warm days and refreshing rain showers. While wildlife viewing may require extra effort due to the lush vegetation and bumpy muddy roads may cause some challenges, the chance to see chimpanzees and a variety of other animals, adds to the allure. Furthermore, January is an excellent time for birding enthusiasts to witness migratory bird species.
Overall, January provides a unique perspective on the Western Circuit, offering rewarding wildlife encounters, captivating landscapes, and a less crowded safari experience for those seeking an adventurous and immersive journey into Tanzania's natural wonders.

Alexander B Once in a lifetime experience Couples
An absolutely incredible experience. We saw the Big Five, Super Seven and beautiful landscapes. We booked a private guided tour with mid-range hotels and it definitely did not disappoint. Almost all the hotels rooms/tents were incredibly nice. spacious and well kept. Our guide Albert made sure the experience was unforgettable. He was attentive without being pushy and constantly went the extra mile to make sure we got the best possible trip. Can highly recommend Moneky Adventures and especially Albert
AdvChick Safari - 4 days of amazing animals Friends
Working with Monkey, you can tailor your trip as much as you want. They are easy to contact via email and WhatsApp to make sure you can coordinate your trip and they sat down with us before and after the safari to make sure they could make it the best trip possible. I would have tailored our trip more if I knew better. We spent nights at Eileen's Tree Inn and Tortillas Tented Camp which were both really great. Then we stayed at Rhino Lodge which had a nice dining area but I didn't care for the location or rooms very much. I would have tried to upgrade to one of the lodges at the top of the crater. The crater is amazingly beautiful and it would have been so much better to have stayed closer. We had a 3 day private safari with them and they had gotten Banana as our guide. What a guy! He did the best and most he could to make every minute count when in the Serengeti. He was very knowledgeable about more than just animals including birds and plants.
Valerio Highly recommended for safari trips! Couples
We booked a private safari through Monkey Adventures for 2 persons, 7 days. Locations were Tarangire, Ndutu, Central Serengeti, Ngorongoro. Overnight stays in lodges and camps, medium class.
We did the safari after a 6 days safari in Uganda, which we also booked through Monkey Adventures and which we reviewed separately (Monkey Adventures Uganda).
The booking process was handled very well by Monkey Adventures. All our questions were answered quickly by email. The proposed schedule worked out very well.
Our guide for the whole trip was Banana. We were so happy to have such an amazing guide. First and foremost, Banana is an excellent driver and made us feel very safe during transfers and game drives. He has excellent knowledge of the parks and knows how to handle difficult terrains. We really learned to appreciate Banana’s driving skills when, while game driving, we saw other jeeps who got lost, while other ended up stuck in thick mud.
Banana’s knowledge of the fauna is excellent. He knew 99% of the animal’s names, including birds. For the remaining 1% he didn’t remember he was able to find it out using a book. He also knows a lot about the behavior of the animals. Most importantly, he constantly shared the information with us and we could really tell he is very passionate about his job.
The vehicle was a jeep with a capacity of up to 7 passengers, although we travelled as a couple. This meant a lot of extra room which proved precious during game drives. We could easily stand and walk around while trying to shoot that perfect picture. The jeep was in very good conditions.
Lodges met our expectations overall.
We would book with Monkey Adventures and Banana again!
Jurgita M Amazing 5-day safari with Monkey adventures
We were all ladies on the trip, so we were looking for a reliable tour operator. And I can already say that our expectations were exceeded. Monkey adventures are true professionals. I have worked in the tourism industry, so I have dealt with many tour operators and travelled extensively, but I have rarely seen such a high level of service. Everything was perfect: the presentation of information and communication by e-mail before the trip, the itinerary, the hotels we stayed in, the guide.
The guide, Elias, was of course the main contributor to the success of our trip and the impressions we had. He is like an encyclopaedia of nature and wildlife, who has a great knowledge of animal behaviour and was able to show us the Big Five! He is an open, sincere and kind professional who showed us 3 parks with all their beauties and gave us a lot of knowledge. Elias shows great respect for nature and for other people, is an interesting conversationalist and a very charismatic personality. In addition to all his good qualities, he is also an excellent driver and has the best eyesight I have ever seen - he can see a leopard in a tree from a very long distance and even while driving a car. All this made our trip unforgettable. Thank you all for this and especially Elias!
