Tanzania Safari in January

January in Tanzania marks the beginning of the Green season, situated between the short rains of October to early December and the long rains from March to May. While experiencing occasional showers, this month offers relatively drier weather. It falls outside the peak tourist seasons, striking a balance between manageable crowds and accessible accommodations. The arrival of the Wildebeest Migration in Southern Serengeti and Ndutu brings thrilling wildlife sightings, including zebras, impalas, and cheetahs. Ngorongoro Conservation Area flourishes with lush landscapes, abundant wildlife, and migratory birds, while Tarangire and Lake Manyara showcase their diverse ecosystems and offer captivating wildlife encounters.

FAQs for Tanzania in January

1. What do you mean by the term Green Season? Tanzania goes through a period known as Short Rains from the end of October till December. These rains impact the dry and arid lands of Tanzania and lead to a sudden burst of greenery. However, there is just the right amount of greenery. The grasses don’t get too long and the foliage doesn’t get too thick. This creates a scenic beauty with different shades of green that many enjoy. Hence, it is called the Green Season.

2. I’m on a budget, would you recommend January for me? The beginning of the month sees higher rates as many tourists come to Tanzania to celebrate the New Year. However, as the month progresses, the crowd reduces and with this the rates of accommodations and services goes down.

So, if you’re on a budget, but still want drier conditions with great wildlife visibility, then about mid January onwards would be a great time for you to visit.

3. What exactly is the weather like in January? What should I pack for the trip? Tanzania experiences a moderate climate throughout the year. In January, the temperatures can go as high as 28°C / 83°F and go as low as 15°C / 60°F. During the day, regular trousers, T-shirts, jeans etc. would be sufficient, although for night time you may require some warmer clothing like a pullover, fleece jacket, or a coat depending upon your tolerance.

4. Will it rain during my tour? Tanzania may experience some downpours during this month but they will be very light and not last very long, so they won’t impede your trip at all. The conditions will mostly remain dry.

5. Is there any specific activities that you would recommend doing during this month? We would recommend travelling to Southern Serengeti and Ndutu to get a look at the Wildebeest calving. It is a unique phenomena where Wildebeests synchronise their birthing and thousands of babies are born everyday. It would truly be a remarkable experience for wildlife enthusiasts.

6. How is wildlife viewing during this month? While Tanzania gets greener during January, the foliage does not get thick enough to hide animals from your view. In addition, the number of watering holes that attract animals still remain limited. Therefore, you will get an excellent view of the wildlife during this month.
