Tanzania Safari in May

May marks Tanzania's rainy season, offering a quieter time for travelers seeking discounts and lush landscapes. Despite daily showers and thunderstorms, usually occurring at night, tours are interrupted during the day for only a couple of hours. As the long rainy season nears its end during the latter days of May, the precipitation reduces. Serengeti witnesses the young calves' growing strength, propelling the Migration towards the West and North. Tarangire poses initial game-viewing challenges, but as watering holes outside the park dry up, animal sightings increase. Ngorongoro's dense vegetation gradually dries, offering lovely scenery and uncrowded drives. Lake Manyara too thrives with ecosystems, however, make sure to navigate its tricky roads with caution.

FAQs for Tanzania in May

1. What is the weather like in Tanzania during May? May is a month of changes, as it begins to shift from the long rainy season to the dry season towards the end of the month. If you’re visiting in the beginning of the month you’re likely to encounter thunderstorms, heavy downpours at night, and humidity. These downpours may halt your tour for about a couple of hours during the day. However, if you visit in the latter part of the month, you will have to deal with lesser downpours and your tour might not get disrupted during the day. Humidity will remain, however.

The temperatures go as high as 30°C / 86°F and go as low as 14°C / 57°F.

You can pack clothes such as regular T-shirts, trousers, or joggers for day time and something warmer such as a fleece jacket or a pullover for night time. In addition, packing a rain jacket, an umbrella, and anything else that would help protect you from rain would be a good idea. Also, carry shoes that dry faster and plastic or rubber sandals with proper traction.

2. How does the rain affect the accessibility of roads and parks? With continuous downpours many roads become too muddy or get flooded with water, and hence become inaccessible. Although, your driver will be well experienced and know which roads to use and which to avoid.

Towards the end of the month however, the situation of the roads will get better. They won’t be completely dry and dusty but they won’t be muddy or flooded either.

3. Is May an ideal month for me? The month of May is beneficial for those who are on a tight budget and those who wish to spot a lot of birds.

A lot of accommodations and services shut down but those that remain open offer rooms and services at low prices. Although, please note that it would not be possible to get a budget camp as the campsites will be muddy or flooded.

Birding remains great during this time however, as many birds travel to Tanzania in search of water. You can find turacos, bee-eaters, robins, and many more. If you’re lucky you may even be able to spot fledglings in the nests.

May is also a great month for those who are more interested in natural scenic beauty than wildlife. With the increased rains, the wild areas of Tanzania will be covered in thick foliage, heavy canopies and waves of shades of green. It will be a sight to behold for those who enjoy admiring nature.

Lastly, if you’re someone who doesn't like crowds at all, then once again May might be a good time to visit. Since the crowd will be thin, your driver will be able to get you closer to herds once you spot them, and get the opportunity to admire the animals from a less distance which might be possible during other seasons.

4. Do I need to be worried about the TseTse flies? Yes, the Tse Tse flies and mosquitoes increase in number during this month. It is best to come prepared with light coloured clothing, insect repellents, creams, bands, etc. You can also request such items and a mosquito net from your lodge.

5. Will the rains impact any activities? Yes, the rains are likely to impact activities such as Hot Air Balloon Rides, Night Game Drives, and Walking Safaris.

6. What is the wildlife visibility like during this month? Due to thick foliage and presence of watering holes in multiple locations, wildlife visibility will not be great. You will have to spend more time searching for the animals. However, once you do find them, you will be able to get much closer to them than you could during other seasons.

The wildlife visibility is likely to improve towards the end of the month as watering holes begin to diminish and it gets drier. Some animals may come out looking for food and water resources making it easier for you to find them compared to the months of March and April.
