Paying the balance amount for your Kilimanjaro trek

Congratulations on booking your Kilimanjaro Trek with Monkey Adventures. We are very excited to be given the opportunity to serve you. Thank you for choosing to trek with us.

The most common way to book your Kilimanjaro Trek is to pay a deposit online (30%) and the balance as we get closer to the trek. In this post, we provide information on the various options available for paying your balance amount.

Option 1 - Paying Cash

The best way to pay the balance amount is cash once you arrive in Moshi. And US Dollars are the preferred currency. Please make sure that the notes are printed on or after the year 2006, since only notes printed on or after 2006 are valid currency in Tanzania.

We will be collecting this amount from you, when we meet you for the briefing.

Incase you are looking to pay cash in a currency other than US Dollars, please review this article as well - Supported Currencies

But here arises a common problem. Some are not comfortable in carrying such large amounts of cash. So, we offer an easy and convenient solution to this problem.

Option 2 - Local Bank Transfer

In case you wish to make the full payment before you arrive, you can do a local bank transfer to us. We hold local currency bank accounts in USA (US Dollars), UK (Pounds), Germany (Euros) and Australia (Australian Dollars). You can easily transfer your payment to these bank accounts with a local bank transfer.

Please ask our team for the appropriate bank details. The bank transfer has to be done at least one month in advance.

Once you make the bank transfer, please send us the transaction details for our reference. Once the amount reaches our bank account, we will notify you and update your balance in the system as well.

Option 3 - International Bank Transfer

In case you wish to make the full payment before you arrive, you can do a bank transfer to us. The bank transfer has to be done at least one month in advance. Our bank in Tanzania processes electronic payments very slowly and it takes them 2-3 weeks to release the payment to us.

Please inform your bank that you wish to do an international wire transfer to this bank account. Your local bank will then advise you on the local currency equivalent which will be deducted from your bank account.

Please remember to instruct your bank that all transfer charges need to be borne by you. There will be three different charges - 1) your bank's charges, 2) intermediary bank's charges and 3) our bank's charges. So please make sure you instruct your bank to charge the transfer fees to the sender, and not the recipient.

Once you make the bank transfer, please send us the transaction details for our reference. Once the amount reaches our bank account, we will notify you and update your balance in the system as well.

Option 4 - Pay Online

You can also make the full balance payment online with your credit card. Like Option 2, this would incur a card processing fees of 5%. Also, since it takes 2 weeks for our bank to process this payment, we request you to please let us know well in advance.

Continuing with the previous example, if you have booked Machame 6 days trek at USD 1376 per person. And you have paid a deposit of USD 413. Therefore the balance due is USD 963.

You can pay this whole amount online with a card processing fees of USD 48.15. So the total amount will be USD 1011.15

Summary

To summarize, the four options for balance payment available are

  1. Pay cash during the briefing once you meet us in Tanzania
  2. Local Bank Transfer (USA, UK, EU and Australia)
  3. International Bank Transfer
  4. Pay Online with Card (5% card processing fees)

We are actively looking at solutions to reduce costs and make this process easier. Please let us know if you have any suggestions.

Paying Park Fees with Card

Update (October, 2018) - Park Department has removed this option. There is no provision for customers to pay directly at the park gate
